Plant Suppression and Termination Methods to Maintain Intermediate Wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium) Grain Yield

چکیده

Intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey; IWG) is a perennial sod-forming grass undergoing domesticated for use as dual-use grain and forage crop with potential environmental benefits. IWG plant populations increase stand age, which has been associated reductions in yields after the second production year, thus management techniques are needed to maintain over time. We measured effects of two between-row termination methods (cultivation herbicide application) within-row suppression (burning mowing), applied at different physiological stages during growing season. straw yield, root biomass, weed biomass. Treatments were initiated year harvest consecutive years southeast Minnesota. Grain highest 2 preceding any treatment application declined 3 4 by 82% 57% compared 2, respectively, across all treatments. Termination reduced biomass up 91% control but had no effect on or total yield. Fall burning treatments mitigated negative some yield increased Spring mowing 42% 34%, control. Controls minimal while especially that included application. No sustained yields, positive observed weeds could be considered growers.

Comparison of wheatgrass (A. intermedium) and tall wheatgrass (A. elongatum) in transpiration viewpoint

Transpiration, as one of the components of hydrological cycle, has not been paid enough attention yet, while it is necessary for sound utilization of rangelands, mostly located in the arid and semiarid regions. The comparison of the different kinds of rangelands species in terms of transpiration rates provides range managers the required information to achieve optimal forage production for a gi...

Manipulating plant geometry to improve microclimate, grain yield, and harvest index in grain sorghum

Cultivar selection, planting geometry, and plant population are the key factors determining grain sorghum yields in water deficit areas. The objective of this study was to investigate whether clump geometry (three plants clustered) improves microclimate within crop canopy when plants are grown under varying water levels. In a 2-yr sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) greenhouse study, plants wer...
